When art and the market meet: la Massana and la Boqueria Light Up Christmas with Young Talent

Once again, second-year students from the Illustration program at the Escola Massana were responsible for designing the Christmas campaign poster for la Boqueria.
The presentation event, held in the Massana auditorium, served to announce the winner, Biel Ventura, and the two finalists, Aroa Canay and Marco Halac. This year, the jury was made up of artist Jan Vallverdú; chef Jordi Esteve (Nectari restaurant); Nacho Prats, owner of Grup Pepa Tomate; and designer Andrea Gusi, a professor at the Escola Massana.
During the award ceremony, the president of the market, Jordi Mas Velasco, highlighted that “at la Boqueria we don’t just sell food: we sell culture, creativity, and the city itself. It’s through actions like this that la Boqueria shows itself as a vibrant, creative space rooted in Barcelona.”
For his part, the coordinator of the Illustration program, Pep Montserrat, emphasized that, as a public school, “we have the duty to remain connected to the society we represent, and which in turn gives us so much back. This relationship with la Boqueria helps us connect with what surrounds us, to be a membrane between the educational world and the city.” He also recalled that the school works to “educate citizens with a critical spirit, open and sensitive to everything happening around them. And projects like this are a wonderful opportunity to awaken that sensitivity.”
Finally, the market’s manager, Òscar Ubide, stressed that “everyone knows how to buy and sell, but what gives markets their value is the relationship with the local community, with the neighbourhood, with the people.” Ubide also shared a phrase he had heard a few days earlier in Paris: “in a supermarket, food doesn’t speak. In la Boqueria, it does.”
This now well-established collaboration between the Escola Massana and la Boqueria promotes emerging talent and strengthens the market as a cultural creation space open to the whole city.
Starting December 4, for purchases over €30 at the market’s Information Point, customers will receive tote bags featuring the campaign image “Fes Nadal, fes Boqueria.”
During the holiday season, the market will exceptionally open on December 6, 21, and 28, and on January 4.
