Release of balloons to commemorate the anniversary of the terrorist attack of 17 august 2017
The initiative was organised as a tribute to the victims and their families by the Boqueria traders, florists and former bird sellers.
On occasion of the first anniversary of the awful terrorist attack of 17 August 2017 on Rambla de Barcelona, the Boqueria Market Traders Association commemorated the event by releasing balloons with messages of love. The initiative was organised by the Boqueria Market Traders Association, including the Former Bird Sellers, Florists of la Rambla and the Market traders, as a token of respect and with the wish to commemorate the event but without associating it with any political ideology.
One year ago, and as part of a popular reaction to the attack of 17 August, an anonymous person left a message on one of the Rambla stalls saying “Write your message of love here”. This act lead to the creation of hundreds of messages in different formats which inspired the traders to organise the commemorative initiative.
With the aim of continuing in this spirit, 400 balloons will be released next 17 August at 5 pm with messages of love from the Market traders and the florist and bird stalls. The balloons will be released in a manner that does not harm the environment – they are biodegradable, tied by hand and have no cords- and the respective permit has been obtained thanks to the efforts of the ENAIRE Air Space Operations Coordination Department, which have made this possible.
Invitation to citizens to write messages of love on them
Each stall on la Rambla will have a group of balloons on which any citizen who wishes to can leave their message starting at 3 pm and the balloons will be released at 5 pm. With respect to Boqueria Market the balloons will be located at the back of the Market, near the former fish block in front of the porches on the sea side. Between 3.30 pm and 4:50 pm citizens and visitors who wish to do so can write their messages on the balloons before they are taken to the Rambla entrance, where they will be released.
Through this act, the Boqueria Market Traders Association wishes to pay tribute to the dead and wounded during the terrorist attack of 17 August 2017 in Barcelona and Cambrils as well as to their families, and confirm its condition as a place of peace and welcome, values which it shares with the city of Barcelona and all its inhabitants.
